Shelter project

ADA-A231 Why a shelter…?

The project is dedicated to people working in the field of human rights defense; a place of protection for those who work in difficult conditions and dangerous contexts. The refuge is a dynamic place for gathering and raising awareness, a space for promoting public reflection on issues of social injustice.

The activities of the refuge will take place at the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz, where the Fondazione Fo Rame ETS, is also based, and in Rome at the headquarters of the Fondazione Barba Varley ETS.

Project coordinators: Claudio La Camera, Mattea Fo, Stefano Bertea.

The project promoters

The Fondazione Barba Varley ETS is directed by Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley, with the aim of supporting and raising awareness of the hidden culture of theater. Building on their long experience in the field of culture, the founders decided to focus their attention on the “nameless,” those who live in a situation of cultural emergency and social marginalization.

The Fondazione Barba Varley ETS carries out activities in favor of groups disadvantaged by gender, geography, age, way of thinking, and acting in and outside the theater; it promotes university scholarships and training courses; it supports initiatives by theater groups and communities, encouraging encounters and exchanges between different cultures and skills; it promotes training and teaching to spread theater culture and the skills necessary for its use; it promotes theater research; it encourages individuals linked to theater and other fields of culture with alternative social and cultural objectives.

The Fondazione Dario Fo e Franca Rame ETS was established on 13.2.2019 with the aim of preserving the memory of the initiatives and activities of Dario Fo e Franca Rame.

The founding members are Mattea Fo (President), Jaele Fo, Jacopo Fo, Carlo Petrini, Marco Marchetti (Vice President) and Doriano Cranco. The activities of the Board of Directors are supported by honorary members, collaborators, and volunteers.

The Foundation aims to safeguard and promote the human and artistic legacy of Fo e Rame, acting as a hub for collecting, promoting, and enhancing initiatives, ideas, and projects consistent with the thinking, lives, and values of these two great artists.

The Foundation aims to preserve the memory and disseminate the political, cultural, and social thinking of Fo and Rame, pursuing goals exclusively represented by social, cultural, and environmental solidarity.

The Foundation is based in the municipality of Gubbio, at the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz where it promotes cultural events and meetings. In 2021, following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, it promoted the first reception experiment at Alcatraz, welcoming 26 people (women and children) fleeing the war.

This experience gave rise to the idea of transforming the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz into a project offering shelter and job reintegration for women who are victims of violence and their children.

The Project benefits from the collaboration of: Casa Alda Merini (Milano), IMJUS, Cattedra Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino (Messico), Fondazione Taz Panther (Berlino)

A231

The code A231, refers to one of the most beautiful birds that live and breed on the old continent: the Eurasian jay.

These are protected birds that spend the winter in tropical Africa and return to our skies with the arrival of spring, when nesting begins. To give them a safe haven, we have installed some nests in the woods of the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz.

The Milan Charter

On 22 settembre 2024 in Milan, at the Spazio Alda Merini, the traveling headquarters of the Fondazione Barba Varley, on the initiative of the Fondazione Dario Fo e Franca Rame ETS and the Fondazione Barba Varley ETS a letter of intent was signed against the phenomenon of missing persons and for the protection of victims of violence.

The signatories shared a common and deep civic and cultural concern about the development of aggressive and violent criminal phenomena in significant areas of the planet, and emphasized the vast and profound humanitarian, political-institutional, economic, and social implications.

The Milan Charter commits signatories to “make their specialist knowledge available for the creation of alliances and forms of cooperation useful in combating violence against migrants, women and men persecuted by organized crime, and all victims of ‘desaparición’.”

The organizations that have signed the Milan Charter have declared their willingness to promote, in every possible way, forms of academic and scientific engagement, cultural production and education, research, and knowledge transfer that can contribute to the defense of human rights.

Bone Project -Geographical plot of poetics of resistance (of dissent)

The Bone project operationally expresses the contents of the Milan Charter

Bone is the fundamental part of the structure of the body through which the person has physical stability that makes her active in movement, capable of being in the world.

Bone is a human find.

In Mexico, the pedagogy of the resistance of madri buscadoras teaches how the search and identification of the body of a relative fallen into the abyss of desaparición also occurs through the discovery of a bone.

The Bone is a poetic and political element.

Today, the world is characterized at any ‘distance ‘by growing social inequalities and increasing poverty in the face of the immense accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few, the advancement of authoritarian ideologies and the deprivation of rights and freedom at the individual and collective levels, the remergence of war and genocide, the persistent repression of the migration against the free movement of human bodies. In the face of all this and more, cultural and artistic commitment remains an exercise in resistance and spiritual practice to make a different future thinkable.

Bone is inalienable/The Word is Bone.

Women and men: artists, actors, playwrights, poets, cultural and communication workers, operating in different and geographically distant contexts, adhering to this appeal-project undertake: – to denounce systems of aggression against the integrity of the person and to propose, on the other hand, visions of another possible coexistence; – to facilitate the circulation of the artistic language of dissent; – to stimulate collaborations in defense of vulnerable persons and peoples.
