The 2025 Barba Varley Award

The 2025 Barba Varley Award was awarded to:

Argentine director Gabriel Dombek for his filmic documentation of the conditions of minors and prisons in Mexico.

To the Association MAST – Officina delle Arti, for its work on behalf of minors at the Casal del Marmo IPM.

The award ceremony was dedicated to Cosimo Rega, who chose to launch his acting career outside the prison walls where he was incarcerated.

Gabriel Dombek

An Argentine filmmaker committed to defending human rights in Mexico.

Specializing in social documentaries, he has dedicated his film production to highlighting issues related to crime prevention, the prison system, human rights, and rehabilitation, as well as exploring the vulnerability of minors involved in organized crime.

His works include “Being Nobody,” “Private Visit,” “The Study,” “Our Roots,” and “Dream of the Sea,” among others. He currently directs the Cultural Dissemination Division of the Mexican Institute for Justice A.C. (IMJUS).

Francesca Rotolo

Director, author, and director of MAST – Officina delle Arti.

Francesca Rotolo is an expert in social theatre, directing theatre projects as a tool for inclusion, education, and transformation, supporting parenting in prison and educating about legality.

He conducts theatrical and artistic/cultural activities in the Penitentiary Institutions of Rome-Rebibbia III Casa, in the Penitentiary Institute for Juveniles “Casal del Marmo” in Rome, in Cassino, Sciacca and Palermo-Pagliarelli, to contribute to the recovery of personal identity and the resocialization of inmates through theatre and the arts.
