Why a shelter…?

The project is dedicated to people involved in the field of human rights advocacy; a place of protection for those working in difficult conditions and dangerous contexts. The shelter is a dynamic place of gathering and awareness, a space to promote public reflection on issues of social injustice.

Shelter activities will take place at the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz, where the Fo Rame ETS Foundation, is also based, and in Rome, at the headquarters of the Barba Varley ETS Foundation.

Project coordinators: Claudio La Camera, Mattea Fo, Stefano Bertea.

Progetto rifugio

The Project Promoters:

The Barba Varley ETS Foundation is directed by Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley, with the aim of supporting and making visible the hidden culture of theatre.

Continuing their long experience in the field of culture, the founders have decided to focus their attention on the “nameless”, those who live in a situation of cultural emergency and social marginalization.

The Barba Varley ETS Foundation carries out activities in favor of disadvantaged categories by gender, geography, age, way of thinking and acting in and outside the theatre; promotes university scholarships and training courses; supports initiatives of theatre groups and communities, encouraging the meeting and exchange between different cultures and skills; promotes training and teaching to spread theatre culture and the skills needed for their use; promotes theatre research; encourages individuals linked to theatre and other fields of culture with alternative social and cultural objectives.

The Dario Fo and Franca Rame ETS Foundation was founded on 13.2.2019 with the aim of preserving the memory of the initiatives and activities of Dario Fo and Franca Rame.

The founding members are Mattea Fo (President), Jaele Fo, Jacopo Fo, Carlo Petrini, Marco Marchetti (Vice President) and Doriano Cranco. The activities of the Board of Directors are supported by the work of honorary members, collaborators and volunteers.

The Foundation aims to safeguard and spread the human and artistic example of Fo and Rame, and is intended as an operational centre for the collection, promotion and valorisation of initiatives, ideas and projects consistent with the thought, life and values of the two great artists.

progetto rifugio ADA-A231

The Foundation intends to nourish the memory and spread the political, cultural and social thought of Fo and Rame and pursues objectives exclusively represented by social, cultural and environmental solidarity.

The Foundation is based in the municipality of Gubbio, at the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz where it promotes meetings and events for the promotion of culture.

In 2021, following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, it promoted the first reception experiment at Alcatraz by welcoming 26 people (women and children) fleeing the war.

From this experience was born the idea of transforming the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz into a reception and work reintegration project for women victims of violence and their children.

A231

The acronym with the species code A231, indicates one of the most beautiful birds that live and reproduce in the old continent: the Coracias garrulus.

These are protected birds that winter in tropical Africa and return to our skies with the arrival of spring, when nesting begins.

To give them a safe refuge, we have installed some nests right in the woods of the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz.
