María Cánepa (1921-2006) is a renowned Chilean actress who has received numerous awards and the Chilean National Prize for the Performing Arts.
In 1988, during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile, María Cánepa hosted Julia Varley in her home during Odin Teatret’s tour when they clandestinely performed in a church.
The friendship with Julia Varley lasted for years, with exchanges and visits, including to the Transit Festival in Holstebro, Denmark.
Ave Maria by Odin Teatret is dedicated to María Cánepa. Mr. Peanut, the character representing death, brings her back to life, transforming mourning into an act of love.
